Kurl is a studio project of three friends born out of the ruins of the pre-2014 Sevastopol indie scene, Odesa ennui and the shared love for the music of the early 2000s. In 2018 Olena and Arsenii came up with some melodic lines over Langusta’s loops that ended up in their first EP Pigeon Days. In 2021, their second EP Fickle was released: with it, they added field recordings and live instruments to samples and loops.

Kurl:
“Хмари (Clouds)” is our first song where we didn’t produce the lyrics. It’s a poem by Yevhen Pluzhnyk, one of the poets of the Ukrainian Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. This is also not the typical Kurl sound: there are no samples or even drums here. We started working on it in December 2021, a few months before the full-scale war and postponed the work several times for obvious reasons. It seems like we caught the pure melancholy of the poem with the bare guitar so we only added some additional chords and field recordings of the bike ride two of us took. It’s a song about loneliness but for the three of us, it’s ironically become a way to be together while being apart.

Kurl — студійний проєкт трьох друзів, котрий народився з уламків севастопольської незалежної сцени після 2014, одеського спліну та спільної любові до музики нульових. У 2018 році Олена та Арсеній вигадали кілька мелодій на лупи Лангусти — з цього народився мініальбом Pigeon Days. У 2021 вийшов мініальбом Fickle, у якому до бітів додалися живі інструменти та польові записи.

Kurl:
“Хмари” — наша перша пісня на чужий вірш, ба більше — вірш поета з українського, хоч і малого, канону. Це також пісня з нетиповим для Kurl звучанням: вона не містить семплів і барабанного “хребта”. Ми почали працювати над нею у грудні 2021 року, зі зрозумілих причин кілька разів відкладали, ще кілька разів переписували. Вона меланхолійна, проте не важка, й в цьому є певний затишок. Вірш Плужника ніби надає безпосереднє переживання самотності, але, за іронією, для нас трьох реліз цієї пісні є способом об’єднання, оскільки на сьогодні всі ми фізично знаходимося далеко одне від одного.
